My Problem with Pharrell’s “Girl” Album Cover

"Girl" Album Cover

“Girl” Out in Two Weeks (according to ThatGrapeJuice.net)

Hey guys! How do you do! Hope you had a good Valentines Day or if  February 14th is just another date in the calendar for you, I hope you had a great day! Now today I want to talk about the man of the hour, Pharrell Williams and his much anticipated album “Girl” …..well actually just the cover.

Following a string of recents hits which include “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke ,”Get Lucky” with Daft Punk and not to mention the infectious Despicable Me 2 soundtrack “Happy” it’s safe to say that Pharrell is the name ringing in most people’s ears. He’s beginning to transcend to a higher lever of stardom having taken home four Grammys including Producer of the Year-Non Classical, along with Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Record of the Year and Album of the Year for his work with Daft Punk on their album Random Access Memories. He’s also nominated for an oscar award! :O :O. In the words of Kevin Hart “He’s a big deal!”.

Why did I feel the need to promulgate his recent and prospective accolades? Because I want you to realise something. Not that my brief aggrandisement of him holds much weight, but I wanted to put his current position in popular culture in perspective. You’d only need to look how vehement the media were at his choice of headwear at the Grammys to know that everything Pharrell does now is ‘News Worthy’. Oh and he knows this.

This is why I have a slight problem with his album cover. Here he is pictured with three beautiful women all in white bath robes wearing blacked out sunglasses. The first thing I noticed was that there were no black women (I’m one of those weird people who call mixed race people mixed race instead of black). I have a problem with this because decisions like these are well thought of. He would’ve had a team of people who along with helping him pick the right cover would also highlight ways in which it could be construed and what connotations people would derive from it. My point is , Pharrell would be very aware of the repercussions of leaving out a black women in an otherwise semi-multiracial album cover (I hope that’s an actual term lol) . So why do it pharell?

Pharell would have done well to positively add to the ever going argument about the idea of beauty and the representation of black women in the media, to decry this lingering notion that black women are an acquired taste or better yet, some sort of abstract art that only a selected few would possibly ever like. I’m not saying that by including a black woman on the cover then everything will be fine, no. I’m saying Pharrell as well as other big black male stars are in a position to help the cause by the constant inculcation that black women are in fact beautiful.

There have been major strides in terms of how black women are represented in the media, it’s not all bad. But sometimes things like this can exacerbate matters. Although I seem acrimonious , I’m not a black women and I don’t truly know how it feels to see something like that, or if indeed it even has much of an affect. I want to know what you think about this cover or your views on how black women are represented  in mass media overall.

Hope this sparks a discussion of some sort lol

Love you all! :D

ps. I’m a Pharrell Fan
